Author Dainon Moody is a self-proclaimed wanderer on the fabled road of life. After devouring the first section of this compilation nearly a year ago, drawn by the heading of a place in which I now live, I put the book aside. What a shame that I waited so long to pick it up again.There is, throughout the entire collection, a note of sadness. A pang that binds those who have experienced the ache of early loss or know the truth of a Sunday afternoon. But the sorrow serves purpose. Where Moody weaves in joyful parts in unexpected places. Creating a sense of complicated and even suspended joy with each poem. Poems born out of moments with family (siblings, grandparents and uncles)and friends. Whether it is in the barren desert of Idaho or the quiet of a bachelor apartment, each page provides a pulsing rhythm. Where both jazz lovers and crazed library patrons alike are welcome.
For one who sat in the same chairs of that brilliant conductor, this collection is an accomplishment born out of two decades of experience. Only the beginning to what I hope will be more finished lines. In truth, I wish I had half the discipline to write as regularly and as well as Mr. Moody.

The Sound of Scampering is an absolute treasure. It sits on my coffee table waiting for me to pick it up as I do occasionally when I'm searching for words which resonate with my temporal emotions. Moody has a distinctive talent of delivering me into the world of his personal thoughts. I adore his work as it inspires me to seize my own life as it unfolds, embracing the light and dark as equal fellows of spirit. I will be eagerly anticipating Moody's future writings.
This book doesn't have to be a cover-to-cover read and I love that. I find myself revisiting it to discover a new passage or reread one I enjoy. Moody's voice comes through in so many different tones but with an overall peaceful flow. I look forward to reading more of his work in the future.
Poetry, in the modern age, is accessible. It has nothing to do with Grecian urns or the Light Brigade...which is why Mr. Moody's works are so on point. It isn't the great events, but the celebration of a life lived in the small details that resonate so fully in this collection. It is a must-have for any bookshelf.
This book is the opposite of a page-turner. You'll get lost in Moody's world instantly and you'll want to read and reread each poem. The writing itself is phenomenal. It's deceptively simple and fresh every time you look again. I'm usually quite cynical when I get even a hint of "heart-strings" manipulation but Moody's poems will get you in the right way. No one with a heart/brain combo can read a poem like "Progeny" or "Secret Prayer" and not be moved. Or not be thoroughly entertained with his stories of non-albino friends, lonely hummingbirds, boob jobs, or Jim Morrison the Mexican. You'll wish you could hear and follow your own "sound of scampering", and go literally sock-free (and figuratively) once you finish this book.
To write a book of poetry, such as The Sound of Scampering, is to wear your heart on your sleeve. It is that very vulnerability that allows us to empathize with the author and relive or relate our own life experiences. Dainon's first literary effort is a pure and honest expression of emotion. It touches on core human emotions; humor, a desire to be loved, and a desire to question everything, even our very existence. For a freshman effort, this reader feels that he knocked it out of the park! I am not a professional critic, but that's exactly the point. I was able to read each poem without preconceived notions of what to expect, and I was more than pleasantly surprised!
Cried, laughed, smiled...cried, laughed, smiled...this book is trip to the deepest, simplest and most sensitive parts of ourselves. It's like looking in the mirror, like connecting with our most pure feelings and sensations, and very universal as well as unique. You won't regret a single line )
This book of autobiographical poetry covers a lot of ground. Moody explores innocence, loss, nature, loneliness, contentment, disappointment, hopefulness and fear mixed with a bit of sarcasm and whimsy. It's a pretty enjoyable afternoon read. One topic notably missing is good ole fashioned love. I'm interested to see what he has to say about that one day - the good kind - the kind that works out. He might have potential to write some good stuff on it.
